RICHARD WALKER
Richard Walker's recent paintings have been based on and inspired by "Alice in Wonderland" a project started in late 2006 for the Hornseys Gallery in Ripon.
The results embrace the comparisons between Victorian culture and our own; the morals, contradictions and issues of law and order. As the books (particularly 'Looking Glass') see everyhting in a twisted and distorted way, I thought this was relevant now as it was 150 years ago. From a technique point of view, Richard used a lot of paint, straight from the tube, to make sure these images were nothing like the smooth pages of a book!
Richard Walker studied Graphic Arts (Camberwell Schooll of Art) and Printmaking (Chelsea School of Art). His studies were completed in 1977, the punk era, a radical influence still present in his work today. More recently and post-September 11 2001, he has introduced more pastoral/mythological elements to his work. (see the works below painted after 7/7/05).
Richard Walker has had regular gallery shows at Minsky's Gallery, Thumb Gallery, Jill George Gallery, New Academy Gallery, Curwen Gallery, London; Madison Galleries, Los Angeles, Galerie Meissner, Hamburg, and White Gallery, Brighton.
He has completed many installation/commissions including a mural at Axis Restaurant, One Aldwych Hotel, London; Three Window Installations, Barneys, New York; Glass Wall Installation, Hyatt Hotel, Warsaw; and The Cow Parade, London.
