Phil Tyler studied initially at the East Ham College of Technology (Foundation in Art 1982-83) then Loughborough College of Art & Design for his BA Hons Fine Art (painting) degree graduating in 1986. During these years he spent some time at Virginia Commonwealth University, USA on their BFA Fine At Course. Phil Tyler completed his studies with an MA in Printmaking at Brighton Polytechnic (1988 to 1990).
Phil Tyler is a practising artist who is interested in the relationship between the materiality of painting as a cypher for grief, loss and the notion of the sublime. His practice involves painting, drawing, printmaking photography, collage, digital image and writing.
He has exhibited in the ING Discerning Eye, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, The Lynn Painter-Stainers prize, The Garrick Milne Prize, The Royal Over seas league, East, The National Open and the Whitworth young contemporaries competitions.
His work is in both public and private collections in this country as well as in America, Australia, Finland, Germany, Holland, Hong Kong Sweden and the USA, including Brighton Museum and Art Gallery, Peterborough Museum, Prizeman Seabrook Collection, University of Essex: Modern and Contemporary British Art Collection.
In 2018, one of his self portraits was selected for the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition. The exhibition which began in London subsequently toured the rest of the UK.
In 2017, he appeared on Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year and his work was featured in their London exhibition.
His first book "Drawing and Painting the Nude" was published in 2015 and his second, "Drawing and Painting the Landscape" in 2017.
In 2026 Phil Tyler will publish his third book upon Portrait Painting.
Phil Tyler is currently senior lecturer at the School of Art and Media, University of Brighton. With over 30 years of teaching experience, Phil Tyler is interested in developing a PhD research proposal looking at the pedagogy of drawing in HE and its history throughout the 20th and into the 21st century.
