Tracey Emin became known widely over 25 years ago, alongside Damien Hirst, Angus Fairhurst and Sarah Lucas as one of the YBA’s (Young British Artists).

The ‘Sensation’ exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1997 included her piece ‘Everyone I have Ever Slept With’, a tent embroidered with names of her partners. The piece was famously bought by Charles Saatchi but then sadly destroyed in the Momart warehouse fire in 2004.

From the start Tracey Emin, and her work, have split opinions, like marmite you either love her work or you hate it. We like it, and have exhibited her editions for over 12 years, including work we exhibited at the London Print Fair in 2009.

More and more people seem to like her work too and appreciate that it is not just gratuitous, but deep and meaningful. Madonna said in 2004, after receiving a UK Music Hall of Fame Award from Emin: Tracey Emin is ”intelligent and wounded and not afraid to expose herself. She is provocative but she has something to say”.

The Mother series of 26 unique mono prints from 2017 have six different background images. They were first created as lithograph prints, then on top of each Tracey Emin added further hand painted pictoral elements using acrylic paint and India ink. The one shown above is Mother 3.

The series as a whole is an intimate reflection on the recent passing of the artist’s mother.

A consummate and academically-trained draughtswoman, such works can be read as a stream of consciousness: vignettes that open a window onto an inner world.

Tracey Emin said at the time: “My emotions force the drawing out of my hand… I am the custodian, the curator of the images that live in my mind. Every image has first entered my mind, travelled through my heart, my blood - arriving at the end of my hand. Everything has come through me.”

In 2019 she had a major exhibition of paintings, bronzes and other work at the White Cube called ‘A Fortnight of Tears’ recalling her feelings on the death of her mother.

The in 2020 year Tracey Emin battled cancer, but also worked on a major exhibition at the Royal Academy ‘The Loneliness of the Soul’ - Tracey Emin/Edvard Munch’.

The RA exhibition featured more than 25 of Emin’s works including paintings, some of which will be on display for the first time, as well neons and sculpture. These works, which explore the loneliness of the soul, have been chosen by Emin to sit alongside a carefully considered selection of 18 oils and watercolours drawn from Munch’s rich collection and archives in Oslo, Norway.

In 2025 Tracey Emin exhibited in the USA in her first museum exhibition 'I Loved You Until The Morning', at Yale Center for British Art, New Haven, Connecticut.
