INTERIOR/EXTERIOR

ABOUT:

We are pleased to start the year with an exhibition looking at the interior and exterior of buildings and houses, complemented by sculptural ceramics for inside and out.

Having trained as a designer, Maggie Tredwell (originally from London) worked in Brighton and Worthing until 1998 when she began a painting course at Northbrook College. She graduated in 2003 with a first class BA Honours Degree in Fine Art.

She says "My work continues to centre on discarded and broken things and buildings. Some of the most recent paintings are of abandoned buildings in the process of change. Walls crack and surfaces peel off, this process interests me”

Anja Niedring (born 1969) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1989. In 1996 she attained "Meistershulerin", a diploma, in Professor Jerry Zeniuk's painting class, whose style in abstract painting she emulates with her own muted colour pallette. In 1997 Anja was awarded the postgraduate DAAD Scholarship to spend and paint for one year in London, that year her work was included in the Summer Show "Haus der Kunst" at the Rathaus Gallery in Munich.

Anja now lives and paints in Brighton, taking inspiration from the Sussex landscape and developing her own impressionistic style.

Chris Lewis trained at Wrecclesham Pottery near Farnham, Surrey. Since graduating in 1975 he has worked at the pottery at South Heighton, established by Ursula Mommens in the 1950's. He spent 1978 travelling in West Africa studying traditional pottery making techniques. His work is influenced by tribal art and archaeology, in particular the unglazed wares found in archeological sites all over the world, including Neolithic China, south western United States, Susa in Iran and village pots made all over West Africa.

His work is either thrown on a wheel, or made with a combination of throwing and hand building techniques. Chris specialises in large and small garden pots, garden seats and sculptural pieces. All garden pots are guaranteed 100% frost proof.

The pots selected for this exhibition have a warmth and humanity, which reflect the enduring fascination that still motivates his work.
