Anthony Frost

Beyond Cool

6 to 29 August 2016

Private View: Friday 5 August from 6-8pm

We are pleased to present Beyond Cool, an exhibition of new paintings, works on paper and prints by Anthony Frost.

The exhibition's title, and one of the paintings in the exhibition, come from a line in "Inherent Vice" a 2014 stoner crime film directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, adapted from the novel of the same name by Thomas Pynchon. As with its source material, the storyline revovles around Larry "Doc" Sportello, a stoner hippie and PI in 1970, as he becomes embroiled in the Los Angeles criminal undderworld whilst investigating three cases interrelated by the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend and her wealthy boyfriend.

One of the main pieces in the exhibition is Mirror Man, painted in 2011 when Anthony Frost was artist in residence at Eton College. For the first time, he worked with assistants in creating his paintings. The title comes from a live album and track by Captain Beefheart from 1967.

Alongside the works on canvas, we will exhibit five smaller works mounted on arches paper and framed.

In these new works Frost places materials beyond the edge of the canvas in ways he has not done before, creating shapes that are not ordered or predetermined. The resultant works have a rythmn or vibe, drawing the eye from one element to the next.

Many of Frost's works in the past have been inspired by music, in particular Captain Beefheart and The Fall, as a well as more obscure US indie bands.

The two new prints in the exhibition Red Crayola and Blue Crayola, are from a 1966 Captain Beefheart album "Red Crayola, a Parable of the Arable".

Anthony Frost has already had a busy year for exhibitions, with shows in Falmouth, Wells and the RA (Works on Paper).

The Falmouth exhibition was called "Kith and Kin" and included works by several St Ives 'dynasties': Frosts, Hiltons, Lanyons and Nicholsons.

Later this year Frost will exhibit at Beaux Arts in London, and at the Armoury Show in New York.
