ARUNDEL FESTIVAL EXHIBITION

ABOUT:

For this year's Arundel Festival Exhibition we will show one of West Sussex's finest painters: Based just north of Chichester, Barbara Macfarlane regularly exhibits at the Zimmer Stewart Gallery, as well as with galleries and fairs in the UK and US. In the garden we will feature the futuristic pieces made from found materials by Stuart Slade.

Barbara Macfarlane’s work is better described as paintings from landscape rather than paintings of landscape.

Place is important but it is perhaps not the true subject of her paintings, which she says are “about shape, colour and balance”. Barbara Macfarlane is well known for her abstract beach and South Downs landscapes. For this exhibition her subjects include Terre Rouge, the red landscape of south Provence and moving water.

Barbara Macfarlane studied at Exeter College of Art & Design. She graduated in 1980 and then spent several years travelling, mostly in India and always painting the landscape. Outside she paints in ink and watercolour. In the studio she paints on a larger scale in oils.

Stuart Slade's work is concerned with creating sculptures, which examine the human condition and how it can relate to our reliance and dependence on machines and technology. The work is also an expression of his inner feelings of fear, paranoia, humour, and confusion. This has developed from the chaos within his dreams.

Stuart Slade often combines fun and the fantastic to create sculptures with a darkly surreal edge, which sometimes displays a strong sci-fi aesthetic (as in Honk). This is also evident in one piece he has created
especially to be show which will be seen as if walking off the gallery shop front at first floor level.

Having graduated only in 2009 with a BA (Fine Art - Sculpture) from Northbrook College, Stuart Slade has exhibited at Cass Sculpture Foundation, Goodwood, and some people may remember his large scale "Spiders" on the A27 Roundabout as part of the Arundel Festival in 2008.
