MATTHEW BODIMEADE

Matt Bodimeade’s work is drawn from the materials and methods more usually associated with the construction of buildings.

Basic form, an antidote to functionality and a reaction to the restraints imposed by need to “give customers what they want” are the main influences on his sculptures/relief paintings. Matt likes to have free rein with the materials he uses: these can be anything from metal, wood, stone and glass.

His works are thus bold explorations of material, space and form. Each piece could be described as an “intervention” in the space in which it sits – the interaction/relationship between the work and the space around it are as important as the piece itself if not more so.

In the new works for his 2008 show, Matt has produced a series of paintngs in which tension/energy/movement are key elements.

Having studied at West Sussex College of Art and Design and Brighton Polytecnic, Matt worked on a number of public and private commissions throughout the UK (including the Cass Sculpture Foundation).

Matt Bodimeade lives and works in West Sussex.
