LIZ GUY

Liz Guy’s experience of potting at school started a lifelong interest in ceramics. The unexpected present of a potter’s wheel and an electric kiln, some twelve years ago, rekindled her enthusiasm for the art.

She attended classes at Morden and then at Roehampton College where she developed a talent for throwing and an interest in novel uses of stains and glazes. At this time her interest was mainly in the creation of utilitarian pottery with artistic overtones, for which she received commissions.

After moving to Hampshire in 2001, she became a member of the renowned West Street Potters at the Old Pottery, Wrecclesham, where she developed her current interest in large hand built art objects and exploring the potential of dry glazes in reducing and oxidising atmospheres. She also enjoys experimenting with new clay mixtures that give a strong textural element. This adds a tactile quality to the obvious visual appeal of her works.

Her current series include “Gaia”, which is inspired by the materials and hues of the primitive earth and “Growth”, which represents the hope that comes with the emergence of new life from the earth.

Liz has collaborated in this exhibition with Felix Anaut to produce a series of works to complement his new series of Vase paintings.
