JONATHAN WADE
Jonathan Wade graduated from Bath Spa University College ten years ago, where he studied under Felicity Aylieff. He was encouraged early on to be experimental and this is evident in this new body of work.
Having spent the last few years basing his work on repetitive forms – cups, jars and lidded vessels – Jonathan has simplified and minimised the forms producing some surprising results. His recent flat pieces, for example, were influenced by the lid of a plastic barrel which, he realised, had the aspects of both a plate and a bowl. This gave rise to a series of bowl/plate forms.
In his new work a number of geometric shapes are added creating ‘landscapes’. This change immediately takes away any thought of function in the pieces, already in question in the previous forms and defines these bowl/plate pieces as sculptural objects.
Instead of a possible discussion about form/function we are now able to consider the nature of the landscapes and how they might relate to our own.
Jonathan Wade has exhibited his work at Contemporary Applied Arts, Collect and Ceramic Art London.
